I can admit it: I have a lot of pairs of shoes. Do I wear them all? Nope. Do I even come remotely close to wearing every pair just once a year? Nope. Do I have shoes of ridiculous colors I bought in college? More than one pair.
Since starting on my journey I've taken to being aware of what shoes I'm wearing. That's not to say that I didn't throw on heels for a wedding. Or that I'm not living in boots trudging through the snow. Both are factual.
Valentine's Day is now two weeks gone and history. We have another fifty weeks until the Holiday of Hearts. Something happened this year. Something unexpected. Something life altering. I got the best Valentine's Day gift not only ever in my life, but also the best possible and functional gift.
Will got me Cycling Shoes. Going to my weekly spin classes I've been improving. Will bought himself Cycling Shoes several months ago and he said biking was easier and he was obtaining more miles. I had my reservations of the Cycling Shoes. I knew nothing of them. I was afraid of clipping into the peddles and getting stuck.
I'm sold. I'm smitten. And not just with Will.
The day after Valentine's Day I got to class early, proudly and with excitement carrying my Shimano's in. Will had showed me the night before how to tighten the shoes on, and gave a demonstration of how to clip in and out of the peddles. I was surprised how easy it was for me to clip in and out. I was also surprised that I didn't hurt myself!
I've been to three spin classes since clipping my new shoes into the peddles. My biking results are improving weekly, I'm excited to go bike earlier every week. And most of all, it's in the numbers that tell me it's all about the shoes.
Prior to my Valentine's Day Shimano's I would average 13-14 miles in class. I struggled with keeping my shoes in the cages of the bike. Now that I'm clipped in, the difference is undeniable. My first week with them I biked 16.9 miles in 1:01:32. The following week I biked 19.3 miles in 1:09:11. Just today I biked 21.4 miles in 1:17:04. Not only are my numbers more consistent now, but I'm aware of my cadence far more than I ever thought possible.
Most women get jewelry, flowers, or candy for Valentine's Day. I'm glad I'm not quite the norm.
