Re-Committing

Don't let the title fool you. I've not fallen on the wayside, lost my way, or given up. In fact, I can pretty proudly say just the opposite: I've stayed on track and then some.

This re-commitment goes back to the beginning; or near the beginning, but definitely the beginning of this year for sure. The first race I trained for was the Commitment Day 5k on January 1st of this year. Will and I ran side by side, him finishing one second ahead of me; literally.

As a mid-year (or close enough) reminder, there was a Re-commitment Day 5k. Same idea, pledge to continue a healthy way of lifestyle with activity and exercise. Will and and I went and ran it. There were a few differences this time around. Change is good my friends.

I let Will run on his own, at his pace. I've had the privilege and now experience of running in races, in groups, etc and Will really has only had the opportunity of the Commitment Day 5k. As well I wanted Will to find his pace and comfort level. When Will and I do the Chicago Triathlon we've decided we will each do it, cheer for the other, but not wait on the other; there's no point.

There was a lesser and smaller group at the Re-commitment Day 5k than in January, but the idea was the same. The energy was the same, and while the weather wasn't the same I can say I was thankful that it wasn't too hot or humid.

Will improved and lessened his time from January and I tacked on a bit, it's been happening and I can't beat myself up over it. What I can do is take inventory so to speak of my goals for the rest of this year. Look ahead to next year. And start to commit again.

I began this year wanting to complete the Commitment Day 5k and then three days later the Indoor Triathlon. That then lead to my wanting to complete the Esprit de She Triathlon in June and Chicago Triathlon in August. Around that same time (still in January), I decided my year-end goal would be to complete a half marathon.

Something went so wrong it was right in my planning. Since that not-so-cold New Years Day I have done two indoor triathlons, run five more 5k's, two half-marathons, and completed a sprint distance triathlon. Not bad for eight months, huh? Not bad at all.

So what does all of this mean? First and foremost, and possibly the most obvious, it means I can do anything. I can do anything I put my mind to. It's cliche. It's grade school motivation. So go ahead, call me a cliche grade schooler, and I'll tell you that you're right.

What else does it mean? Well, I still have to finish out the Chicago Triathlon, a goal I made for this year back in January. And I have to finish the Chicago Half Marathon, a goal I guess you can say I made back in January, but have however completed twice over now.

What else does it mean? Well, it's August, 2015 if more than half over now, which means 2016 is approach. It's time to think about next year. 5k's come up and can nearly be done with no notice. Heck, I've done two half marathons this year without a whole lot of notice. But it also means planning for bigger, better, more challenging things.

I can't say for sure, but I think my stepping into the gym almost a year ago, making the commitment to run a 5k on New Years Day, and living through this year with activities is only going to lead to bigger and better things. Things I may not have ever known about and certainly never thought I'd do.

So here's to commiting to finish what I've started and start something new.
