Days after joining the gym, Will went to a Spin class. To be honest, I'm not sure what prompted him other than he owned a bike that I had actually never seen him ride in the two years we had been dating. After he went to the spin class he told me about the Crazy Woman teaching it and how he talked to her afterwards, introducing himself. I had seen spin classes portrayed in media, and even the day that I was given a tour of the gym the Cycle Studio was pointed out to me.
Even after hearing Will's review of the Spin class I still thought "I don't see the appeal, you go into a semi-dark room, peddle as someone is telling you what to do, you sweat, listen to loud music, and get nowhere." Well that thought was before I had my initial meeting with a trainer, and that trainer I mentioned before, Kristine? As the fates of the world would have it, she was the Crazy Woman teaching the spin class Will went to.
Working a Monday-Friday 8-5 job with nearly an hour commute each way made attending Spin Classes pretty difficult for me. I was fortunate to have a Friday off in October and went with Will to Kristine's Spin Class. It's biking. I own a bike. I used to bike. I'd bike 20+ miles on a trail before I started my work day. I could do this.
I couldn't do it.
I was less than eight weeks into my journey, but it took all I had to peddle that bike for an hour, and forget turning up the resistance. And when we were told to stand, I all but face planted over the handle bars of the bike. I stayed seated the rest of that class.
I stayed seated for the rest of the next class I went to as well.
Black Friday came along and I was off work and found myself in Spin Class again. This was the 'Black Friday' Special Spin Class. Now typically Black Friday equates to deals; although admittedly I'm not one to go out shopping on Black Friday. In the workout world Black Friday Special Spin Class meant that both Kristine, as well as her boyfriend Matt, were instructing the class and it was extended to 75 minutes versus the typical 60 minutes. Some bonus and bargain I thought.
I stood for the first time and stayed standing. I didn't have 'biker butt' as I called it afterwards, meaning I didn't have boney tailbone pain for days later. In that 75 minutes, I biked 14.6 miles, which also was the furtherest I had went at that time. It was also that class that prompted me to look at the schedule and find out there was a Sunday morning class that Matt taught that I could attend. I was hooked.
It might not have been a buy one, get one. Or a 75% off sale. But that 'Black Friday' Special Spin Class, it turned out to be a bonus for me. I get it now. I do. I get the appeal of getting to class early, getting my bike set up. The darker the room, the better. The louder the music, the faster I spin. When given the opportunity to add a quarter or half turn, I turn a half turn. I'm still not as fast as Will, I don't get as many miles in as he or others in the class do. But compared to that girl who couldn't stand in her first class, I think I've come miles more than I thought possible. And I know I have miles more to come.
